Twilight and winter tricksters who command cold illusions, midnight shadows, and binding, deceptive pacts.
Unseelie Fae are the darker, more secretive branches of Fae society. They are commonly found in moonless forests, ancient ruins, deep caverns and regions where mist rarely lifts. Their reputation among outsiders is often sinister, but Unseelie Fae are not inherently evil. Their communities simply value secrecy, caution and self-preservation more strongly than openness.
Unseelie Fae often possess pale, grey, violet, blue or unusually dark complexions. Black, silver and white hair are common, while eyes may appear unnaturally bright in low light. Their wings frequently resemble moths, bats, dark butterflies or translucent shadowed leaves. Clothing tends toward black, deep purple, dark green and silver, often decorated with thorns, feathers, bones or moon symbols.
Unseelie Fae are commonly reserved, suspicious and difficult to impress. They rarely trust strangers quickly and prefer to observe before speaking openly. Loyalty is highly valued once earned, and betrayal is rarely forgotten. Many possess a dry sense of humour and take pleasure in outwitting those who underestimate them.
Unseelie communities tend to operate during twilight and night, when their territories are easier for them to navigate unnoticed. Hunting, gathering, fungi cultivation, alchemy and scavenging ancient ruins are common. They are skilled at surviving in regions considered unpleasant or dangerous by other races.
Secrets, names and promises hold significant cultural weight. Some Unseelie communities believe that revealing too much about oneself gives others power over you. Stories are often passed through small family groups rather than large gatherings. Masks, veils and symbolic jewellery may be worn during ceremonies.
Settlements are commonly hidden inside dense forests, caves, abandoned ruins or mist-covered valleys. Entrances may be intentionally difficult to find. Homes tend to use darker wood, stone, hanging fabrics, fungi, lanterns and natural cavern formations.
Alchemist, Beast Master, Weaponsmith and specialised gathering or crafting roles suit Unseelie communities well. Scouts, hunters, spies and ruin explorers are also common.
Unseelie Fae often understand Dark Elves and Tieflings better than many surface races because all three are frequently judged by appearance or reputation. Relationships with Seelie Fae vary from close kinship to rivalry. Wood Elves and Fawns may respect them while remaining cautious around their secretive behaviour.
