Overview
Riverfolk are Human communities whose traditions revolve around rivers, lakes, marsh edges and fertile waterways. They understand that water is more than a resource—it is a road, food source and natural boundary. In the early days of Aldoria, this makes Riverfolk particularly valuable explorers and traders.
Appearance
Riverfolk have no distinct physical traits. Their clothing tends to be practical and resistant to mud and water, often consisting of rolled sleeves, boots, leather, loose shirts and weatherproof cloaks. Fishing hooks, carved wooden charms and river stones are sometimes worn as personal tokens.
Personality
Riverfolk are commonly patient, adaptable and observant. Rivers change constantly, and their culture encourages people to adjust rather than fight circumstances they cannot control. They often possess an easy-going manner but can become fiercely protective of waterways that sustain their communities.
How They Live
Fishing, farming, ferrying, hunting and trade are central to Riverfolk life. Boats and rafts allow communities to move supplies before reliable roads exist. Riverfolk may become some of the earliest people to establish regular connections between otherwise isolated survivor camps.
Culture & Traditions
River crossings, seasonal floods and fishing seasons influence many traditions. Important journeys may begin with a small offering or ceremony at the water’s edge. Families often pass down knowledge of safe crossings, fishing locations and navigable waterways.
Settlements
Riverfolk settlements favour riverbanks, islands, lake shores and raised ground near wetlands. Docks, bridges, ferries and fishing platforms are common features. Buildings are usually positioned carefully to avoid flooding.
Common Roles / Professions (Optional)
Farmer, Breeder, Beast Master and Alchemist fit Riverfolk life particularly well. Fishers, ferrymen, traders, hunters and guides are also common.
Relationships With Other Races
Riverfolk commonly trade with Halflings, Goblins, Fawns and other Human cultures. Swamp Trolls and Wild Fae can become either useful neighbours or dangerous rivals where territories overlap. Riverfolk generally prefer negotiation because keeping waterways open benefits everyone.
