Overview

Gnomes are a small but remarkably resourceful people found throughout Aldoria. Known for their curiosity, patience and inventive minds, they often form close-knit communities around workshops, gardens, mines, trading settlements and places of learning.

Their small stature is rarely considered a weakness among Gnomes themselves. Rather than relying upon brute strength, they often favour preparation, knowledge, craftsmanship and clever solutions.

Many Gnomes possess a strong desire to understand how things work. Some spend decades mastering a single craft, while others travel widely in search of unusual materials, forgotten knowledge or new ideas.

Although outsiders sometimes regard Gnomes as eccentric, their settlements are often organised, productive and tightly connected communities.

Appearance

Gnomes are among the smallest humanoid races of Aldoria, generally standing between three and four feet tall.

They usually possess human-like features and proportions but have shorter, more compact builds.

Hair colours vary considerably and may include brown, black, auburn, blond, grey and other natural shades. Beards are common among some Gnomish men, though they are not required and Gnomish appearance varies greatly between families and cultures.

Gnomes commonly favour practical clothing suited to their lifestyle and profession. Craftspeople may wear leather aprons, gloves and belts carrying tools, while rural or woodland Gnomes often favour woven fabrics, cloaks and natural colours.

Jewellery, handmade trinkets, engraved tools and family heirlooms are common forms of personal decoration.

Limitations

Gnomes do not possess the raw physical strength, reach or body mass of larger races.

Extremely heavy equipment and oversized weapons may therefore be difficult for them to use effectively, and confronting Giants, Trolls or similarly powerful creatures through brute force alone places them at a natural disadvantage.

Gnomes instead tend to rely upon preparation, agility, knowledge, teamwork and craftsmanship.

Their curiosity can also become a weakness. Some Gnomes become so focused on experiments, discoveries, strange objects or unfinished projects that they overlook obvious risks.

Gnomes are not automatically skilled craftsmen, inventors or alchemists simply because of their race. These abilities must still be learned through character roleplay, professions and progression.

Maturity & Lifespan

Maturity Age: Gnomes generally reach adulthood at around 20 years of age.

Lifespan: Gnomes typically live between 180 and 250 years.

Their long lives allow dedicated individuals to spend many decades mastering a profession or field of study, although age alone does not automatically grant expertise.

Traits & Culture

Gnomish culture commonly values curiosity, craftsmanship, knowledge, cooperation and community.

Skills and knowledge are frequently passed between generations through apprenticeships, family workshops and community teaching.

Individual Gnomish settlements often develop around particular resources or professions. One settlement may become known for smithing and stonework, while another might specialise in agriculture, healing, alchemy or trade.

Gnomes tend to place significant value upon objects that have been carefully made. A reliable handmade tool, successful harvest, unusual invention or well-crafted piece of equipment may command more respect than something valuable merely because it is expensive.

Despite their reputation for craftsmanship and curiosity, Gnomes are not restricted to scholarly or artisan lifestyles. Individuals can become warriors, farmers, merchants, healers, explorers, breeders or virtually any other occupation permitted within Aldoria.
