Overview

Hobgoblins are a disciplined and highly organised people, recognised by their long pointed ears, sharp features and reddish or copper-toned skin. Taller and more heavily built than Goblins yet generally leaner than Orcs, they rely less on brute strength and more on training, strategy and cooperation.

Old stories often portray Hobgoblins simply as warmongers, but their societies are built around far more than battle. Order, preparation, loyalty and responsibility are central to their way of life. A well-organised settlement, defended walls and reliable supply stores are considered just as important as a skilled warrior.

Hobgoblins believe strength comes from individuals working together toward a common purpose. Their warriors train in formations, their craftsmen work to strict standards, and their communities often develop clear chains of responsibility.

Even Hobgoblins who never carry a weapon are expected to contribute something useful to the survival of the settlement.

Appearance

Hobgoblins usually possess rust-red, copper, reddish-brown or dark red-grey skin.

They have long pointed ears similar to Goblins, but their faces are generally more angular and their bodies more human-like in proportion.

Small tusks may occur, although they are considerably less pronounced than those of Orcs.

Black, dark brown and deep red hair are common, often worn tied back, braided or cut short for practical reasons.

Their organised armour and clothing are one of the easiest ways to distinguish them from Orcs. Hobgoblins favour fitted armour, matching equipment, shields, spears and disciplined military dress rather than heavily tribal or improvised equipment.

Limitations

Rigid Thinking:
Their strong preference for order, planning and clear responsibility can make some Hobgoblins struggle when situations become chaotic or unpredictable.

Pride & Honour:
Insults, broken agreements and public humiliation can be taken very seriously. A Hobgoblin may pursue a dispute longer than is practical simply because their honour or reputation has been challenged.

Less Agile Than Goblins:
Hobgoblins are larger and stronger than ordinary Goblins, but they generally lack the smaller race's ability to squeeze through tight spaces, move unnoticed or escape quickly through difficult terrain.

Less Powerful Than Orcs:
Although strong and well trained, Hobgoblins usually cannot match an Orc in raw physical strength. Their advantage comes from discipline, planning and teamwork rather than brute force.

Reliance on Structure:
Hobgoblins often perform best when roles, expectations and leadership are clear. Poor leadership or internal disorder can seriously weaken a group that normally functions through coordination.

These limitations are intended for roleplay flavour and character identity. They are not mandatory mechanical restrictions unless server staff specifically introduce rules for them.

Maturity & Lifespan

Maturity Age: Hobgoblins generally reach full adulthood between 18 and 20 years of age.

Young Hobgoblins are expected to spend these years learning discipline, practical skills, settlement duties and the responsibilities expected of an adult member of their community.

Their coming of age often involves completing an important duty, trial or responsibility that proves they can be relied upon by others.

Lifespan: Hobgoblins commonly live between 80 and 120 years.

Older Hobgoblins frequently become commanders, instructors, craftsmen or advisers, with experience considered nearly as valuable as physical ability.

Traits & Culture

Height: 5'8" – 6'6"

Weight: 150 – 230 lbs

Languages: Common, Goblin, Orcish

Alignment: Typically Lawful Neutral or Lawful Evil, though individuals may follow any alignment.

Hobgoblin culture places enormous importance on order, discipline and loyalty. Promises made to a group, settlement or commander are expected to be honoured, and abandoning others through cowardice or selfishness is viewed with particular shame.

Unlike Goblins, who often favour improvisation and scavenging, Hobgoblins prefer preparation. Supplies are counted, defences maintained, weapons cared for and duties clearly assigned.

Their settlements frequently contain organised workshops, training areas, storage buildings and strong defensive structures.

Military skill is respected, but so are smiths, builders, farmers, animal handlers and others who keep the community functioning. A Hobgoblin who maintains the settlement's food supply may be considered every bit as valuable as the warrior guarding its gates.

Their clothing and armour tend to be practical and uniform in appearance. Dark leather, iron, red cloth and simple symbols representing family, unit or settlement are common.

COMMON ROLES / PROFESSIONS (OPTIONAL)

Hobgoblins value organised professions that contribute directly to the strength and stability of their communities.

Suggested roles:

Armorsmith
Weaponsmith
Saddlesmith
Beast Master
Breeder
Farmer
Alchemist

Builders, guards, strategists and traders are also common roles within Hobgoblin communities.

These are only suggestions. Hobgoblin characters may choose any profession permitted by the server.
